Swinomish Casino reopens after cyber attack

The Swinomish Casino and Lodge in Anacortes, Washington has reopened after a three-week closure caused by a cyber attack.
The casino and on-site restaurants at the Swinomish were closed on April 5. During the closure guests were also unable to make reservations at the lodge and the RV park.
On April 24 Swinomish staff announced their reopening on their Facebook page. “Our casino, dining, and lodge facilities are operational, and we look forward to welcoming back our valued guests, dedicated team members, and members of the tribal community.”
Few details regarding the cyber attack have been made public. Those responsible for the attack have not been identified, but local law enforcement and cybersecurity consultants did work with the casino while it was closed.
Swinomish officials have also not revealed if any guest information or data was compromised by the cyber attack. Anyone contacting the casino lodge has been advised to monitor their finances and credit cards for any potential unauthorized charges.
Cyber attacks on casinos and gaming companies are becoming more common. In Washington state the Nisqually Red Wind Casino in Olympia was closed for two days in March due to a cyber attack, and the Rivers Casino Des Plaines in Illinois closed for several days in August after customer and employee data was stolen.
The most well-known cyber attack on a casino occurred in Las Vegas in September when MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment were both target by and held ransom by cyber attacks. The cyber attack on MGM Resorts affected many Las Vegas strip properties disabling slot machines, card keys, payment systems, and online booking systems for several days.
